Russia to build four reactors in India
NEW DELHI: India will sign a deal with Russia to construct four nuclear reactors for electricity generation. The deal will be signed during President Dmitry Medvedav’s visit to New Delhi in December. “We are planning to build four reactors with Russia’s assistance in Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu,” Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar was quoted by a Russian television channel as saying. He said each reactor would generate 1,000 megawatt (MW) of electricity. He said the Nuclear Supplier Group’s (NSG) waiver would enable the two countries to start the construction by early next year. In February, a memorandum of understanding was signed for the construction of the reactors. India is aiming to boost its nuclear power generation by 10,000 MW. Sources in the Russian nuclear corporation, RosAtom, said experts had completed the design of the two reactors. iftikhar gilani
